Prospect Watch: El Paso had 12 hits and defeated the Space Cowboys to open their final series of 2025. … Center fielder Clay Dungan had another productive night at the plate, contributing three hits, including a pair of doubles while driving in two runs in the victory. Dungan ranks second in the PCL with 33 doubles, somehow still 15 behind teammate and league-leader Yonathan Perlaza. Overall, Dungan has been just below average offensively in the PCL, but he has hit a career-high 14 homers, and he is third in the league with 103 runs scored. The former Royals draft pick will be eligible for free agency this winter if he is not added to the 40-man roster. … Tirso Ornelas singled three times and scored a run in the victory. Ornelas’ .285/.375/.444 line sits just below the league average in the PCL. Despite that, Ornelas’ walk rate and K-rate have been remarkably consistent over the last few years. He generally posts a 10% walk rate while striking out in about 18% of his plate appearances. Thanks to a lengthy IL stint with plantar fasciitis, 2025 will mark the first time since the 2019 season that Ornelas has failed to play in at least 100 games. He’s played in 77 games for the Chihuahuas and seven for the Padres. … It was a bit of a revenge game for righty Misael Tamarez, who faced the team from which he was released a few months prior. Tamarez worked a team-high three innings and allowed a solo homer while striking out four, earning the victory in the process. The 25-year-old spent parts of four seasons pitching for Sugar Land but mostly struggled. After being released, the Padres signed him and immediately sent him to Fort Wayne. He was with the Missions for three weeks before moving up to El Paso. In six outings with El Paso, Tamarez has a 9.75 ERA, after allowing 22 hits in 12 innings. Remarkably, he’s only walked one batter while striking out ten during his El Paso stint.
We’re getting close to wrapping up our in-season coverage, but still have a handful more treats for our subscribers. You can read John’s interview with Alex McCoy that went live today. And, if you aren’t already a subscriber, you can fix that now!
Roster Moves: El Paso made a series of roster moves, transferring right-handers Clay Edmondson and Maikel Miralles to the rosters of now-idle Single-A clubs’ rosters, while placing Raul Brito on the injured list to end his season. Righties Jared Kollar and Andrew Moore, who was acquired in the Connor Joe deal with Cincinnati, will bolster the El Paso bullpen for the final week. Joining them is lefty Luis Gutierrez. Assuming Gutierrez throws a pitch this week, he will have pitched for all four full-season clubs this season.
